What is Level of Development (LOD)?
Level of Development (LOD) defines the degree to which a building element's geometry and attached non-graphical information have been thought through and modeled. Aligned with AIA BIM Forum specifications, LOD ranges from conceptual massing (LOD 100) to post-construction as-built models (LOD 500).
The 5 Core LOD Tiers
- LOD 100 (Conceptual): Symbol or generic representation of area, height, volume, and location.
- LOD 200 (Schematic Design): Generic placeholder objects with approximate quantities, size, and shape.
- LOD 300 (Design Development): Specific assemblies with accurate dimensions, location, quantity, and orientation.
- LOD 350 (Construction Coordination): Interfaces with other building systems, including connection plates and hangers.
- LOD 400 (Fabrication): Model elements suitable for direct shop fabrication and spooling.
- LOD 500 (As-Built Operations): Field-verified model representing actual installed conditions for FM software.
